The Limestone District School Board offers a variety of French Programs that differ in intensity but share a common vision. Our draft vision statement states that: In Canada, where French and English have equal status as official languages, the LDSB believes all students benefit from second language programming in their cognitive, academic, and social development. Through our FSL programs, all LDSB students will graduate with confidence and ability to communicate in French effectively in their daily lives.

There are many proven benefits of learning an additional language. In Canada, where French and English have equal status as official languages, there are significant advantages to being able to communicate in both. Research shows that second-language learning can enhance first-language and overall literacy skills. There is also evidence that learning another language can help in the development of interpersonal and social skills. According to the 2004–05 report of the Commissioner of Official Languages, research shows that people “who master more than one language increase their self-confidence and self-esteem and are more at ease with others” (Adam, 2005, p. 107). In an era of increasing globalization, it is critical to heighten students’ awareness that English–French bilingualism is an

The LDSB Core French program begins in Grade 1 and continues through grade 12. In our elementary schools all students receive 200 minutes of French instruction based on The Ontario Curriculum 2013 French as a Second Language Core French Grades 4-8 . The Core French Program involves students in language learning through rich, action oriented tasks. In Ontario, all Grade 9 students are required to take one French course and may choose to continue their second language learning to Grade 12. Upon
completion of four Core French credits at the secondary level, students are eligible to receive a Limestone District Certificate of French Study (Core). All elementary and secondary schools in the LDSB offer Core French programming.

How can I support my child in immersion if I do not speak French?
LDSB immersion programs are intended to support students learning French as a second language. All parent communication between the school and home (newsletters, report cards etc.) is in English. It is not expected that parents be able to communicate in French in order for their child to be successful.

What can I do if my child encounters difficulties in FSL?
“If you are concerned that your child is experiencing difficulties, you should let the FSL teacher know so that together you can discuss what can be done to help your child’s learning. Most children encounter challenges from time to time, but if your child is worried, frustrated, or expresses a concern about learning French, it could be the sign of an underlying problem that should be resolved as soon as possible. Children progress at different rates and learn in different ways, so teachers plan instruction and assessment taking into consideration the students’ interests, learning styles, and previously acquired knowledge and skills.” (Framework for French as a Second Language in Ontario Kindergarten to Grade 12, 2013 p. 27). Communication between home and school is
crucial. If your child is experiencing difficulties in FSL, contact the school to set up a meeting to discuss your concerns.
How do I register my child for French programming?
Registration for immersion kindergarten begins in January each year.
How many minutes of French Instruction will my child receive?
Core French: Your child will receive 200 minutes per week of French instruction
In JK to Grade 2 your child will receive 100% instruction will be in French (1500 minutes per week).
In Grades 3-4, your child will receive 80% instruction in French (1200 minutes per week) and 20% in English (300 minutes per week)
In Grades 5-8, your child will receive 70% instruction in French (1050 minutes per week) and 30% in English (450 minutes per week)
In Late Immersion/Extended French, your child will receive 70% instruction in French (1050 minutes per week) and 30% in English (450 minutes per week)
Is transportation provided for students in French Immersion?

What resources are there to help me support my child in second language learning?
The Ontario Ministry of Education supports an online homework support for FSL students called the FSL Homework Toolbox. This website contains: audio files in French and English, video clips demonstrating instructional strategies, a reference guide for specific topics, a list of French language learning websites, and general tips for learning French.
How many secondary credits does my child need to obtain a French certificate?
Core French: Four Core French credits at the secondary level.
French Immersion: Ten immersion credits (four of which must be in French Immersion Language studies) at the secondary level.
Extended French/Late Immersion: Seven immersion credits (four of which must be in Language studies) at the secondary level.
