French as a Second Language


Programmes de français langue seconde


The ability to communicate in French is a valuable skill. Second-language learning strengthens students' ability to understand themselves and other people, and helps them to appreciate the power of words and the many different uses of language It also increases their ability to communicate and participate effectively in the workplace and the global community.
The Core French, Extended and French Immersion programs share a common purpose: to develop students' oral communication (listening and speaking), reading, and writing skills in the French language and to promote an awareness of French culture in Canada and beyond
Core French: Is offered to all students in the Limestone District School Board at the elementary level from Grade 4 and at the secondary level.
A pilot program which began in 2010 offers Core French for 200 minutes per week from Grade 1 in the following schools: Central P.S., Clarendon Central P.S., Elginburgh P.S., Harrowsmith P.S., Hinchenbrooke P.S., Land O'Lakes P.S., Loughborough P.S., North Addington Education Centre, Perth Road P.S., Prince Charles P.S., Rideau P.S., Sharbot Lake P.S., Sydenham P.S., and Winston Churchill P.S.
Early French Immersion: At the Limestone District School Board, an Early French Immersion program is offered with entry points in JK, SK, and grade 1. In the program at each grade, the Ontario provincial curriculum is implemented for all subject areas. For students from JK to grade 2, their day is 100% in French. English language instruction begins in grade 3. Early French Immersion students have the option of continuing their secondary studies at Frontenac Secondary School, Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Napanee District Secondary School & Sydenham High School.

Extended French Program: The purpose of this program is to develop grades 7 and 8 students’ skills in oral communication, reading, and writing, in French. It implements the Ontario provincial curriculum and challenges student to think critically in both of Canada's official languages. Extended French accepts all students with Core French background who are interested in learning en français. 70% of the curriculum is offered in French and 30% in English. Extended French students have the option of continuing their secondary studies at Frontenac Secondary School., Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Napanee District Secondary School & Sydenham High School.
