The Limestone District School Board operates Parenting and Family Literacy Centres in three elementary schools with the support of the Ministry of Education. The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board operates one site within the Kingston region.
The Centres are free of charge and are open to parents, grandparents and caregivers of children from birth to six years of age. Each Centre provides play-based activities within a school setting. These activities help prepare children for school and offers parents an opportunity to learn ways to support their children in their learning journey.
The purpose of Parenting and Family Literacy Centres is to:
provide play-based activities within a school setting to help prepare children to learn upon entry in Kindergarten;
offer a family literacy program that develops early literacy and numeracy skills to prepare children for school;
help increase parents’ knowledge, involvement and comfort level with schools;
provide opportunities for optimal child development through positive parent-child interaction;
assist in the early identification of children with special needs; and,
help children transition more easily into kindergarten by allowing Centre staff and kindergarten teachers to work together.
