Transitions

The move from Grade 8 to Grade 9 is likely one of the biggest changes of a student's life, and hopefully one of the most exciting. To help students make a transition to high school, between January and August students, teachers, and parents will be involved in the extensive planning process.

In January, Student Success Team members from high schools will be visiting Grade 8 classrooms and will be explaining course and program choices for next year. Students will have an opportunity to visit their high school, and parents will be invited to Grade 8 Parent Night. These visits are important opportunitiesClick to View Transition to Secondary School PDF Guideto talk to teachers to determine the best pathway to ensure success in Secondary School. All pathways will lead to excellent opportunities in the future, and determining the best pathway is an important process. In order to make the right choices, talk to classroom teachers, take advantage of high school information nights, and be sure to discuss interests and questions.

In August students will receive Grade 9 timetables, and be given the opportunity to tour their high school to become familiar with classrooms, to get lockers, and to pick up textbooks. In September, there are many people available at the high school to support students in their chosen pathway. Administrators, teachers, guidance counsellors, success teachers, learning support teachers, adolescent care workers, and student mentors all want to make the first year of high school very successful. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and get help. Also, do take the opportunity to get involved in extra curricular activities. Getting involved will help make students new friends, develop new skills, and enjoy their Grade 9 experience.
