Parenting & Family Literacy Centres

Limestone Learning Foundation

The Limestone District School Board operates Parenting and Family Literacy Centres in three elementary schools with the support of the Ministry of Education. The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board operates one site within the Kingston region.

The centres are free of charge and are open to parents, grandparents and caregivers of children from birth to six years of age. Each centre provides play-based activities within a school setting. These activities help prepare children for school and offers parents an opportunity to learn ways to support their children in their learning journey.

The purpose of Parenting and Family Literacy Centres is to:

  • provide play-based activities within a school setting to help prepare children to learn upon entry in Kindergarten;

  • offer a family literacy program that develops early literacy and numeracy skills to prepare children for school;

  • help increase parents’ knowledge, involvement and comfort level with schools;

  • provide opportunities for optimal child development through positive parent-child interaction;

  • assist in the early identification of children with special needs; and

  • help children transition more easily into Kindergarten by allowing centre staff and kindergarten teachers to work together.

Every child who attends a centre must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is not required, however, visitors will be asked to sign in. All centres are open when schools are open, Monday to Friday, and families are free to use the centres as many times as they choose during hours of operation.

New: The Ministry is changing the way these programs are provided. As of July 3, 2018, the City of Kingston will pilot the local transformation of program for children and families, which are now grouped under the new banner of the children's and family centres. These new EarlyON programs will be delivered by Northern Frontenac Community Services Corporation, Kingston Community Health Centres and the Boys and Girls Club of Kingston & Area. EarlyON locations and hours will be shared with parents and caregivers in the coming weeks.

The City thanks Limestone Advisory for Child Care Programs and Parenting and Family Literacy Programs for the valuable work they've provided over the years in supporting children, parents and caregivers, and they are committed to supporting them as they transfer their EarlyON programs to the city’s new providers.
