The Canadian Music Class Challenge is CBC Music's salute to music education. In association with MusiCounts, CBC Music invites music instructors to teach their students a Canadian song from a pre-approved list for a chance to win thousands of dollars in musical instruments.

The Elginburg choir was selected as one of 10 finalists in Primary (Kindergarten to Grade 3) Vocal category for its rendition of “Scars to Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara.

The choir is made up of children from Grades 2 to 8.  Choir Director Jennifer Guild, a Grade 3/4 teacher who has directed the choir for the last 10 years, says the students are a hardworking bunch who practice at least two to three times each week on their lunch hour.

Ms. Guild says she chooses songs that have positive and inspirational messages, songs that the students likely already know and may already be singing along to on the radio.

“The Elginburg Choir has had many amazing opportunities to perform including singing to the residents at a local senior home several times a year and singing in concert with Miss Emily in Kingston,” says Ms. Guild. “This choir is a very exceptional and dedicated group of young people. We are very excited to have made the top 10.”

This year, an estimated 50,000 students from close to 1,200 music classes signed up from every province and territory to learn and perform their best version of a Canadian song on every instrument imaginable.

The Limestone District School Board is situated on traditional territories of the Anishinaabe & Haudenosaunee.
