Trustees of the Limestone District School Board approved a balanced operating budget of $244.7 million for the 2019-2020 school year. Next year’s budget also allocates $27.8 million for capital expenditures.

“Despite significant fiscal constraints and delays through the budget process, staff presented Trustees with a balanced budget that directs as many resources as possible to students in the classroom,” says Board Chair Suzanne Ruttan, and Trustee representing South Frontenac.

The majority of the budget – almost 79% – is directed to classroom instruction which includes staffing costs for teachers and support staff. The next most significant expense is pupil accommodation – school operations and maintenance – which accounts for 10% of the overall operating budget.

School boards set an operating budget (revenues and expenses) and a capital budget (money for buying or maintaining fixed assets such as buildings, and equipment). The Ministry of Education requires school boards to balance their budgets (revenues must be greater than expenses).

Most funding is tied to enrolment - how many students attend its schools. This is called the Grants for Student Needs, or GSNs, and for 2019-2020 will total $12,246 per student. This funding is supplemented by a variety of additional grants for things such as special education, transportation, capital needs and other set items determined by the province.
