The Limestone District School Board is saddened to learn that a Muslim-Canadian family from London, Ontario was targeted Sunday evening in what police are calling a hate crime. Four individuals were killed in the intentional attack, including a 15 year old. A nine year old child remains in hospital. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, friends and anyone affected by this tragic event.

Police believe the family was targeted because they were Muslim. This kind of hate has no place in our communities, and no place in our schools. We stand with the local Muslim community, and those around the country, and we remain committed to combating Islamophobia, racism and discrimination in all its forms. Incidents such as this emphasize the importance of educating students about respect, equity and diversity. We will continue to work with our school communities to promote safe and inclusive learning and working environments for all students and staff. 

This violent incident may cause fear and anxiety in Muslim community, and other racialized or marginalized communities, and we are here to offer support. The board’s Educational Services staff are available to support students, families and staff as needed. We have also offered our support to the Islamic Society of Kingston.
