Kingston Transit and students of the Limestone District School Board (LDSB) will once again change the way Kingstonians look at public transit – literally. This spring, selected bus shelters will be wrapped with contemporary youth-designed art in Phase II of Kingston Transit and LDSB’s illustration collaboration.

In 2018, students designed the artwork for a bus wrap representing the places, pursuits, and the freedoms they experience when they hop on board and explore Kingston.

“This year, Kingston Transit commissioned students from Karen Peperkorn’s Creative Arts Focus Program to brainstorm concepts and provide the finished illustrations for 15 bus shelters scattered throughout the city,” explains Jeremy DaCosta, Director, Transit and Fleet Services. “This is a livable art project. Each shelter will tell a unique story about the neighbourhood, interests, or activities that Kingstonians can experience in our city.” Illustrations entitled ‘Superheroes Waiting for a bus,’ ‘The Island Ferry,’ ‘Get Active,’ ‘Under the Sea’ and ‘A Wave of Sports’ are just some of the artworks that have been selected to be installed.

“Community outreach and design is an element of the visual arts program at LCVI,” says Karen Peperkorn, Creative Arts Focus Program Co-ordinator/Founder.  “Students from the fall 2017 class took great pride in designing the artwork for the bus shelters. This was a unique project for each of the students involved. We are impressed with their hard work and the final pieces. We value our partnership with Kingston Transit and are excited for the community to experience the student’s visual representation of our community.”

Neighbourhoods will see the artwork installed over a few days starting Thursday, June 20, 2109 weather permitting.

The public is encouraged to take a selfie of themselves beside their decked-out bus shelter and post to social media using #YGKBusStopArt and tag @LimestoneDSB and @KingstonTransit.
