The Limestone District School Board acknowledges the benefits of working in partnership with our Indigenous community. As a result, in partnership with the Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic District School Board, we have an Indigenous Education Advisory Council (formerly Aboriginal Education Advisory Council).
This council is comprised of Indigenous organizations from across the district who support education and Indigenous youth. LDSB/ALCDSB central and school staff are also part of the council.
The council formed in 2008 after provincial government launched the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Education Policy Framework (2007). This policy framework and the Implementation Plan (2014) state that District school boards shall work collaboratively with their Indigenous parents and partners to implement and monitor the delivery of Indigenous education in an inclusive and equitable manner. District school boards are expected to create an Indigenous Education Advisory Council with a specific mandate to provide input into the Ministry Board Action Plan for Indigenous Education.
The Ministry requires all Boards of Education to create an Indigenous Education Board Action Plan that supports Indigenous Education in four areas:
(a) Using data to support student achievement;
(b) Supporting students;
(c) Supporting educators; and
(d) Engagement and awareness building.
