About the Limestone District School Board

The LDSB is situated on the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee. We acknowledge their enduring presence on this land, as well as the presence of Métis, Inuit, and other First Nations from across Turtle Island. We honour their cultures and celebrate their commitment to this land.

The LDSB is the region’s only fully inclusive school board. Limestone schools serve more than 20,500 students in 55 schools and five alternative education centres covering a geographic area of 7,719 square kilometres across the City of Kingston, the Townships of Central Frontenac, North Frontenac, South Frontenac, Addington Highlands, Loyalist, Stone Mills, the Frontenac Islands and the Town of Greater Napanee.

Top Five Highlights of the Region

1. French Community: There is a large French population in this region. The Centre culturel Frontenac promotes arts and culture in Kingston and offers a monthly French conversation group (5 à 7 franco) at a local restaurant. CFB Kingston offers services in French to the community (KMFRC). The Club Optimiste de Kingston meets twice a month and supports French activities in the community. Queen’s University has a Club francophone where you can practice your conversational French skills. The annual Franco-Foire also features services and products offered in French in Kingston.

2. Rich History and Culture: Kingston, often referred to as the "Limestone City" due to its grand 19th-century buildings made from local limestone, is steeped in history and culture. As the first capital of the United Province of Canada, Kingston, along with the surrounding communities, features numerous historical sites, museums, and cultural festivals.

3. Education and Research Opportunities: Home to Queen’s University, Royal Military College of Canada, and St. Lawrence College, the region is a hub for education and research which contribute to a vibrant community of students, academics, and professionals.

4. Outdoor Recreation: The region is renowned for its natural beauty, including the Thousand Islands, Frontenac Provincial Park, St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, and numerous lakes and waterways. These settings offer abundant recreational activities such as boating, fishing, hiking, and camping. Kingston is conveniently located within a two to three-hour drive from major cities such as Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Syracuse, NY.

Interested in Becoming a French Teacher?

Current unqualified French teachers teaching on a Letter of Permission (LOP) can study and teach at the same time through a Primary-Junior French Multi-Session program offered by some Ontario universities. Teacher Candidates get a Transitional Certificate of Qualification and Registration from the Ontario College of Teachers after one semester. At the end of the Multi-Session program, Teacher Candidates earn their Bachelor of Education and full certification (OCT) to teach in Ontario after 24 months.
