The Limestone District School Board has established two positions for Student Trustees on the Board to provide for the interests of students within its school system.

The Student Trustees for the 2019-2020 school year are Annika Putnam (Sydenham High School) and Jessica Crook (Loyalist Collegiate & Vocational Institute).

The Student Trustee position provides for the active involvement of students in their education and allows them to provide greater insight into student activities, programs and needs. This important role also encourages more student involvement in the district’s governance activities, and a greater awareness and understanding of mutual issues between and among the Board, school staff and students.

New for 2020-2021, the Limestone District School Board will establish an additional, or third, Student Trustee position to represent Indigenous students.

One Student Trustee is elected from our rural schools (Ernestown Secondary School, Granite Ridge Education Centre, Napanee District Secondary School, North Addington Education Centre and Sydenham High School). Another Student Trustee is elected from our urban schools (Bayridge Secondary School, Frontenac Secondary School, Kingston Secondary School, Loyalist Collegiate & Vocational Institute, and La Salle Secondary School). This is to ensure accurate representation for all secondary students in the Board.  A third Student Trustee will be elected to represent Indigenous students in the Board.

Student Trustees participate in voting of the Board of Trustees, however, their votes are non-binding. Student representation on the Board is further outlined in
Board Policy 9: Board Operations.

The position of Student Trustee is open to all senior students of the Limestone District School Board who meet the eligibility criteria listed on the Student Trustee Application Form. This policy extends the candidacy to not only the highest two ranking officials of the respective school’s Student Council, but to any senior student in Grade 10 or 11, and returning Grade 12 students.

Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria for the next academic year, and submit a completed application prior to the election. Candidates must prepare a speech not exceeding two minutes to present to the incoming and outgoing members of the InterSchool Council who vote on the positions. The same application process will be used for the Indigenous Student Trustee, but this student will be selected by an Indigenous Student representative from each secondary school.  The elections are generally held in May for the following school year. The Student Trustees may occupy the position for a one-year term only unless they are subsequently re-elected during regular Student Trustee elections.

The election of Limestone Student Trustees for the 2020-2021 school year (Rural, Urban and Indigenous) will occur on Monday, May 4, 2020. Application deadline is Friday, May 1, 2020.
